An ePortfolio is an electronic collection of artifacts that shows learning over time. Within an ePortfolio you will find artifacts or evidence that may include writing samples, photos, videos, observations, lessons, artwork and more. You will also find reflections or narratives, which are a key component telling why the artifact was chosen and what was learned from the process.
There are three types of ePortfolios: Competency, Learning, and Showcase. As seem in the diagram below each ePortfolio is based on extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. On our campus we find many ePortfolios are a combination of the three, using what we call a hybrid ePortfolio. Before deciding the type of ePortfolio to make, determine the purpose, the audience, and the evidence you need. It is important to have clear expectations and allow time for the ePortfolio to develop.
The Competency ePortfolio demonstrates achievement of set criteria, is a systematic collection of student work, and evaluates student progress toward a goal. This type of ePortfolio is also called assessment or summative. The School of Education at UW-L uses the Competency ePortfolio to show student understanding of the 10 Wisconsin Teaching Standards.
The Learning ePortfolio is generally a work in progress, focuses on the ePortfolio as a process, and includes self-assessment and reflection. The emphasis is on reflection. The Learning ePortfolio is also called a reflection, developmental, formative, or working ePortfolio.
The Showcase ePortfolio demonstrates exemplary work and skill, illustrates experience and achievements, and focuses on the ePortfolio as a product. The Showcase ePortfolio is also called a capstone, professional, presentation, career, or employment ePortfolio.
The Hybrid ePortfolio is a combination of all three.
MyD2L is a hosted ePortfolio service provided by D2L for students who are graduating and would like to retain and continue to use their ePortfolio after graduation. You can copy your ePortfolio information to myD2L and continue to collect artifacts, create presentations, and share evidence of achievement with others. This service is offered free by D2L, watch for an email when you near graduation about this service.
