 Academic Success Institute (ASI)

The Academic Success Institute (ASI) is designed to facilitate a smooth transition from high school to college for prospective freshmen who have the need for support in order to successfully obtain a college degree.

Description

  • The ASI program introduces new students to the college experience by providing a series of General Education courses in order to help them adjust to the college routine.

  • Approximately 20 students are enrolled for six weeks of intensive instruction in college level courses and developmental activities.

  • The program takes place during the summer before freshman year, and provides further support during the regular academic year.

  • The Institute’s record proves that retention and grades can be improved through this transitional academic experience.

Requirements

  • Students interested in attending the Academic Success Institute must fit one or more of the following criteria:

  • First generation college student (Neither parent received a bachelor’s degree)

  • Historically under-served group (African- American, SE Asian, Native American, and Latino/Hispanic)

  • Economic disadvantage

Advantages

  • College courses at UW-L during the summer (5-8 credits) 

  • Intense preparation for the rigors of college curriculum

  • During their first semester, all ASI students are enrolled together as a cohort group in UWL 100, a one-credit elective for first year students at the university.

  • Year-round advising from ASI program director, Connie Vanderhyden

  • Submitting an application for admission to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is a requirement for participation.

  • To apply, submit:

  • The UW System application, available online at http://apply.wisconsin.edu.

  • Students will also complete an ASI application and be interviewed prior to acceptance into the program.
