Academics

Academic Success

From time to time, your student will likely struggle with his or her academic course load. Encourage your son or daughter to visit the Murphy Learning Center for tutoring and academic advice. The Academic Advising Center will
also be a place your student will want to visit frequently to ensure he or she is progressing toward graduation.

Getting Access to Your Student's Records
The University is prohibited from releasing certain information to parents without permission of the student (see FERPA below). However, students can grant access to their parents or guest access in order to share information or pay their bills.

If you are curious about your son or daughter's grades, you may ask him or her to print off a copy from the WINGS student center for you.

FERPA - Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

The same laws that give parents and students access to and control over a child’s educational records during elementary and high school transfer ownership of the records to the student at the college level. According to FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, also known as the Buckley Amendment), college students are considered responsible adults and are allowed to determine who will receive information about them. Under this law, parents who want to receive a copy of their student’s academic or financial records can do so if their student signs a release form.

Study Abroad

The Office of International Education can help students select and prepare for a summer, semester, or year-long study abroad experience. Parents can find out more about study abroad including locations available, the various types of programs, expenses and scholarships, and other valuable information from the Study Abroad Office.

Textbooks

Undergraduate students at UW-L rent their textbooks from the University Bookstore instead of buying them. Items such as notebooks, writing utensils, and snacks can be purchased here, as well as official UW-L apparel.
