Veterans MemorialCHECKLIST FOR INCOMING STUDENTS

Below is a list of the tasks and issues that should be taken care of before (sometime WELL before) the beginning of your first semester at UWL. This was prepared by members of the campus Student Veterans Association (SVA). We hope you find it helpful. If you have any other questions or need help in other areas, please feel free to contact us. There’s a list of contacts at the bottom of this form. We hope you’ll consider attending an orientation for incoming veterans to be held at the beginning of every semester.
Check items off when completed:

1. Be sure that you have taken any Placement Exams necessary. These are usually for English, Math, and Foreign Languages. These tests will determine the level of courses in these areas you can take. Most upper level courses require prerequisites, and it is placement in these courses that the tests determine. Contact: Counseling and Testing Center*, 608-785-8073.

2. Learn how to use the campus internet system. You will be receiving messages from campus offices and organizations using this system. You’ll need to be familiar with this before classes begin. (We’ll be covering this information at the Veterans’ Orientation.) Contact: ITS Support Center, 103 Wing, 608-785-874.

3. Be sure that all your paperwork for veterans’ benefits are completed. Failure to do this may affect your getting paid in a timely manner. Contact: Jennifer Weber, 117 Graff Main Hall, 608-785-8952

4. Register for classes. If you have questions, contact: Frank Tierney, Academic Advising Center, 64 Cartwright Center*, 608-785-6950.

5. Take care of your parking permit. Contact, the Parking Office at 608-785-8061 or parking@uwlax.edu

(Some of you may be interested in our state accredited child care center – Sue Wrobel, Director, 608-785-8813. If you need help finding a place to live – on or off campus -- contact the Office of Residence Life – 608-785-8075.)

*There are going to be a lot of changes in campus addresses as we move into the brand new academic building. If there’s an asterisk, this office is affected and you might want to call first to be sure of their current location.

A truth... A veteran, whether a reservist, guardsman or active duty, is someone who at one point in their life wrote a blank check made payable to the "United States of America" for an amount of "Up to and including my life". That is honor, and there are too many people in this country who do not understand it.
