Geography & Environmental Science kudos

John Kelly

John Kelly, Geography & Environmental Science, presented "Patterns and Trajectories of Geographic Change in Different Historical Eras" at Seminario Institucional 'Geografía, Ambiente y Desarrollo' (Seminar Series on Geography, the Environment, and Development) on Aug. 20, 2024 online. Dr. Kelly presented in Spanish to scholars and students at the Centro de Investigaciones en Geografía Ambiental (CIGA) -- "Environmental Geography Research Institute" -- a branch of the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico), Morelia, Mexico. Themes were: What are the most relevant processes and patterns related to geographic change, especially in Mexico? What does a geographic perspective bring when related to analogous disciplines? How has the disciplinary fragmentation of geography (within and among disciplines) evolved in recent decades? How can international collaborative research help overcome some of these challenges?

Daniel Sambu, Geography & Environmental Science; John Grider, History; Gary Gilmore, Public Health & Community Health Education; and Paul Gardner, Luther College; contributed to a Fulbright Presentation & Panel on Nov. 21 in La Crosse. Thank you for sharing your Fulbright experiences at this year's Fulbright chapter meeting of Seven Rivers Region Chapter during International Education Week. Gary Gilmore provided a warm welcome and then we moved into the three main presentation for the evening featuring John Grider's presentation, "Research Abroad: Navigating Maritime Archival Collections in Cape Town, South Africa"; Daniel Sambu's presentation, "Community Conservation and Resilience Amid Global Challenges: Harnessing the Power of Collaboration"; and Paul Gardner's presentation, "Teaching About the 2024 American Presidential Election in Romania." Following the three presentations, we rounded out the evening with a delightful panel Q&A and finally closing provided by Gary Gilmore. Thank you much for sharing your experiences with our in-person and virtual audiences!

Shrobona Karkun Sen

Shrobona Karkun Sen, Geography & Environmental Science, presented "Eye In The Sky: How Can Earth Imagery Be Used To Develop Better Communities?" at La Crosse Science Cafe on Nov. 8 at JavaVino in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Dr. Karkun Sen presented an interesting and highly-interactive presentation on utilizing imagery data from cameras on aircrafts and satellites to monitor and understand community growth including the recent advancements in AI and the science behind imagery analysis.
