The State Department and Department of Defense have classified many modern world languages as "critical languages", demonstrating the need for speakers of these languages.

Scholarships for critical languages
- Funded program for language study
- Merit-based study abroad scholarship providing intensive language study and cultural enrichment opportunities
- Language Levels and Prerequisites
- CLS requires at least one academic year of prior target language study or the equivalent (Advanced Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced) for Arabic and Russian
- At least two academic years of prior target language study or the equivalent (Intermediate and Advanced only) are required for Chinese and Japanese
- Provide funding opportunities to study less commonly taught languages and underrepresented in study abroad
- Represents a pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena
- Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation
Army ROTC cadets and critical languages
CLIP-B is the Cultural and Language Incentive Program - Bonus. Its purpose is to promote the study of language and culture that are important to the Army.
Cadet Eligibility: contracted cadets only (classes taken during the same term the cade contracted are eligible)
