The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)
- Must be a member of ACTFL ($45 for a year membership)
- Includes scholarships for multiple languages
- Provides funding for study abroad opportunities
Fulbright U.S. Student Program
- Provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistant Programs

Critical Languages
Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)
- Funded program for language study
- Merit-based study abroad scholarship providing intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains and cultural fluency
- Language Levels and Prerequisites
- CLS requires at least one academic year of prior target language study or the equivalent (Advanced Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced) for Arabic and Russian.
- At least two academic years of prior target language study or the equivalent (Intermediate and Advanced only) are required for Chinese and Japanese.
- Provide funding opportunities to study less commonly taught languages and underrepresented in study abroad
- Represents a pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena
- Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation
ROTC cadets and critical languages
- The Army will pay up to $250 for every credit in a critical language
- Cadets receive money upon completion of the class with a passing grade
- Critical languages offered at UWL: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian
