Welcome!

Although we are happy that you are considering a Psychology major or minor, we also want to encourage you to check out other departments in CASSH that offer the same excellent training.

Many of our students start with an interest in Psychology and after taking classes in other departments realize they might be more excited about Sociology, or Anthropology, or Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

If you're considering a career in a health-related field, also check out the resources provided by the Pre-Health Advising Center.

Please use the menu below to find answers to your questions about the Psych major/minor.

Who can declare a Psych major?

Psychology is a popular major and we want to ensure that any student declaring the major and any student currently enrolled in the major can complete their degree in a timely manner. Therefore, we encourage you to declare the major as early in your undergrad career as possible.

Any student can declare a Psych major as long as they have accumulated fewer than 85 credits. If you have accumulated 85 or more credits, we ask that you consider Psych as a minor instead and consider another major. There are many majors related to Psych that provide you with the same training and the same skills you obtain from studying Psychology. Check out the many other departments in CASSH ,such as Sociology, or Anthropology, or Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

Who can declare a Psych minor?

Any UWL student can declare a Psych minor at any time.

I have accumulated more than 85 credits - why can't I declare a Psych major?

As mentioned above, Psych is a popular major with many students. To ensure that everyone can graduate in a timely manner, we have to limit the number of majors who declare Psych late in their undergraduate career.

If you have accumulated more than 85 credits, we ask that you strongly consider Psych as a minor and choose from one of the many other excellent majors at UWL.

If you feel strongly that Psych is the one and only option for you, you may apply for a waiver to the 85 credit rule using this Qualtrics form. Note that exceptions are very rare, but all requests will be reviewed carefully in bulk twice a year (October and February).
