University of Wisconsin-La Crosse

The Department of Microbiology at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has been recognized by the Universities of Wisconsin as a "Center of Excellence" for microbiology training. Coursework is taught primarily by UWL faculty, with some guest lecturers from the clinical partners in the Clinical Microbiology Program.

Clinical rotations are conducted at the sites listed below. Note that since the clinical sites charge UWL for training students, additional fees must be passed on to our master's students. Contact Graduate Program Director Paul Schweiger for information on current rates.

Gundersen Health System

Gundersen Health System in La Crosse is dedicated to patient care, medical education, and research. It is the Western Clinical Campus of the University of Wisconsin Medical School and has been named one of the nation's top 100 medical centers. During their time at Gundersen Health Medical Research, students will develop proficiency in:

  • Specimen collection and processing 
  • Bacteriology (General and Anaerobic)
  • Antimicrobial susceptibility testing
  • Clinical parasitology
  • Mycology
  • Immunology
  • Infection Control
  • Regulatory governance of laboratories
Gundersen Hospital and Clinic

Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories

Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories (WDL) is located on the campus of Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, WI. WDL provides full laboratory services to Froedtert Hospital.  In addition, WDL services community-based clinics, physicians, government agencies and is a reference laboratory to a number of hospital laboratories throughout Wisconsin and northern Illinois.  They perform over 5 million tests annually with testing capabilities that match some of the largest laboratories in the world. Working with WDL clinical scientists, students will develop understanding in:

  • Molecular diagnostics, including PCR methodologies, clinical applications of molecular diagnostics, and the development of molecular assays
  • Molecular laboratory operations
  • Molecular epidemiology

Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene

The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH), housed on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is the public health laboratory for the State of Wisconsin. Students will work closely with State Department of Health personnel in the following areas:

  • Mycobacteriology
  • Foodborne and Waterborne Infections
  • Outbreak Investigation
  • Emerging Infectious Diseases and Bioterrorism
