If you are a principal, school counselor, psychologist, or social worker interested in achieving your full leadership capacity, then our Educational Leadership programs are for you! Because our society needs the best people possible in these impactful positions, we create programs that allow you to grow into your best possible self.
We foster collaboration and build comradery by using a model of learning in community, where you will come together with other learners to share common values, beliefs, and emotions about education. This model helps you create a more effective learning process by building from shared experiences.
We emphasize building authentic relationships in your cohort, classroom, school, and community. With a constructivist and experiential learning approach, you’ll actively shape your own learning experience. We understand the best practices for being a culturally-responsive and advanced-pedagogical leader and equip you with the needed skills to be a highly effective professional.

The Director of Instruction (5010) Add-On is a two-course, one-academic term cohort program. Any student graduating from one of our Educational Leadership (5051) programs, or current principals in Wisconsin, may apply to this program, making them eligible for Director of Instruction licensure (5010).
**Note:
The "Program Requirements" green button on this page takes you to the UWL graduate catalog. The 5051 principal licensure is required for admission into the Director of Instruction program, however, won't be reflected in the catalog until the July 2024 update.
The philosophy of the program is a learning-in-community, constructivist model with culturally relevant teaching. Students join the program in a cohort. In a learning community that is constructivist, learners come together as a group to share common emotions, values or beliefs in education and are actively engaged in learning together. This model is considered advanced pedagogy. The program meets the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders standards, the Wisconsin Administrator Standards for Director of Instruction, and professional educational requirements for Director of Instruction licensure in Wisconsin and most other states.
