Defending the environment and community lands in West Africa and Costa Rica

A father and son share their stories

Gray Tappan, a geographer at U.S. Geological Survey Earth Resources Observation and Science Center geographer, and his son Taylor Tappan, who recently earned a PhD in geography from the University of Kansas, will discuss their very distinct approaches to helping indigenous and other rural tropical communities defend their lands and restore their threatened environments. Their methods include deep-dive participatory mapping, GIS, and remote sensing.
