Winter Jazz Showcase

Holiday Jazz; Guest Vocalist; Original Composition Featured

The UWL Jazz Ensemble, directed by Professor Jon Ailabouni, and the Jazz Orchestra, directed by Dr. Jeff Erickson, will present an exciting and diverse evening of big band music in its Winter Jazz Showcase. Each group will perform two holiday numbers beginning with “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow” and “The First Noel” by the Jazz Ensemble. The Jazz Orchestra will follow with UWL’s new voice faculty member Dr. Kourtney Austion singing the Ella Fitzgerald classic arrangements of “The Christmas Song” and “Winter Wonderland.”

The concert will also include a variety of classic and contemporary big band arrangements. A number of soloists will be featured in the Jazz Ensemble’s take on Duke Elllington’s “C Jam Blues,” while the Jazz Orchestra will give solo space to many of its members on Benny Carter’s up-tempo swinger “Doozy.” “Yardbird Suite,” a composition by Charlie Parker, includes Parker’s iconic solo, arranged to feature the Jazz Ensemble saxophone section. Contemporary tunes will be included as well, from Kris Berg’s funky “Fowl Play,” to Dan Gailey’s arrangement of Radiohead’s “Knives Out,” to “El Abrazo,” a samba featuring Jazz Orchestra tenor saxophonist Dylan Stukins.

A highlight of the evening will be the premiere of Professor Jon Ailabouni’s big band arrangement of his composition, “Playful,” a composition originally featured on his recent album You Are Not Alone (SkyDeck Music). This new arrangement was crafted specifically for the UWL Jazz Ensemble.
