UWL Symphonic Band

Ancient Flower

UWL’s Symphonic Band’s spring program promises to mesmerize music aficionados and novice’s alike with a carefully curated selection of little-known gems and audience favorites. Conducted by Dr. Tammy Fisher, recipient of the Eagle Teaching Excellent Award in 2023.

The Symphonic Band’s program explores music based on the stories told through world cultures, such as the English folk songs that build Percy Grainger’s “Themes from ‘Green Bushes,’” or Erik Morales’ “Fable” built on Aesop’s Fables and Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Thursday’s concert takes its name from one of the pieces itself – Yukiko Nishimura’s “Ancient Flower.” The title piece (featuring guest conductor Damian Combs) is an intricately crafted collection of melodies spoken to life by the timbres of the band, followed by the wading flourishes and dominant brass of Michael Markowski’s “The Cave You Fear.”  Works by Jack Stamp, Quincy Jones, and Harold Walters are also featured in the upcoming performance.

Dr. Tammy Fisher, who is busy directing the Screaming Eagles Marching Band in the fall, conducts the Symphonic Band in the spring semester following football season. The band is open to any and all students across our UWL campus without audition, allowing for a diverse background of majors and interests to manifest in the ensemble. The Department of Music and School of Visual and Performing Arts invites all to the UWL campus for an exciting performance this Thursday.
