Celebrations: Native American Heritage Month

Keynote Speaker Leanne Vigue: The Lasting Trauma of Indian Policies in the United States on Indigenous Students

This month’s speaker will briefly discuss the history of Native American boarding schools in the United States and how that continues to impact Indigenous students today. The presenter will use storytelling from her family’s experiences with a Menominee Indian boarding school, the Urban Indian Relocation Program, and pre-Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) times to illustrate the deeps wounds inflicted upon Native families and children. Understanding the past traumas that occurred can help build bridges and pathways forward. This session will include strategies for attendees to build their knowledge of Indigenous concepts to help them relate to Indigenous student needs.
