This program features music that makes musical imagery of the ways light can appear in our vision, opening with “Refraction” by Kevin Poelking. The soaring brass melodies over rhythmic sequences in “Chasing Sunlight” by Cait Nishimura follows, which Nishimura states is inspired by “the experience of driving west into the setting sun, as if trying catch the last few rays of light before dusk.” Attendees can expect a program of uplifting music that leaves a feeling of being refreshed.

Under the direction of Dr. Tammy Fisher, the Concert Band is open without audition to all students on campus, presenting an opportunity for a lower stakes environment while still pursuing excellence in music performance.

This concert also features guest conductor Jen Schraufnagel, who will be conducting “Mountain Thyme” by Samuel Hazo. Schraufnagel, who is a Wisconsin native, currently teaches instrumental music in Tomah at Tomah Middle School and Tomah High School.

Other composers whose work features in this concert include Katahj Copley, Steven Bryant, and Kevin Day. The concert concludes with Kevin Day’s energetic “Summit,” which keeps listeners in anticipation as the music bounces between different time signatures.

Please note that the Lowe Center for the Arts is currently adjacent to a major parking ramp construction project. For more information on parking, visit uwlax.edu/vpa. Admission to this concert is free and open to the public.
