Annual Jazz Scholarship Benefit

An exciting evening of big band jazz, singing, and dancing returns to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with the 37th annual Big Band Cabaret & Dance Party. with headlining feature vocalist Keith Buterbaugh.

Broadway star Keith Buterbaugh, whose career spans some of the most iconic stages in theatre, music, and film, is set to visit UWL as a featured artist for the 2025 “ArtsFest Advance!” series. Buterbaugh, a renowned performer with a rich background in both musical theatre and opera, will offer a unique opportunity for students and the community through masterclasses and a special performance with the students at the Big Band Cabaret & Dance Party.

This show, which serves as an annual scholarship benefit for UWL jazz students, features the Tuxedo Dance Orchestra and Black Coat Jazz Band directed by professors Dr. Jeff Erickson and Jon Ailabouni respectively. In addition to standards from the Sinatra songbook with guest performer Keith Buterbaugh, the ensembles will explore the intersection of big band with various dance styles including swing, tango, funk, waltz, salsa, disco, and even a polka or two. Attendees are encouraged to participate on the dance floor as the bands play the night away.

Free swing dance lessons are offered prior to the show. Those who wish to refresh their moves or learn something new are invited to join anytime from 6-7:15 p.m. for a class led by professional swing dancers Eddie Kim and Perrin lacopino.

The Big Band Cabaret & Dance Party will take place in the Bluffs Ballroom of the UWL Student Union on Friday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m.

There is a $20 recommended donation for adults; $18 recommended donation for seniors; $10 recommended donation for students.
