The program celebrates the vibrancy and depth of Spanish wind band music, featuring works by Jaime Texidor, José Suñer-Oriola, Joaquín Rodrigo, and Óscar Navarro. The UWL Chamber Winds will open the concert with Joaquín Rodrigo’s Adagio Para Orquesta de Instrumentos de Viento (1966), a work that showcases the composer’s signature lyrical elegance and rich harmonic textures.

A highlight of the concert is the 100th anniversary performance of Jaime Texidor’s beloved march, Amparito Roca (1925). A staple of Spanish band repertoire, this work’s infectious energy and rhythmic vitality have made it a favorite of audiences and musicians alike.

The program continues with José Suñer-Oriola’s Chamber Symphony No. 1 (2006), an intricate and expressive three-movement work that blends lush, atmospheric textures with dramatic rhythmic contrasts. The final work on the program, Óscar Navarro’s Hispania (2013), is a dynamic and cinematic composition that captures the spirit and passion of Spanish musical traditions.

The UWL Wind Ensemble is dedicated to performing a diverse repertoire that reflects the backgrounds of its members while also honoring the masterworks of wind band literature. Open to all university students by audition, the ensemble provides meaningful musical experiences for both performers and the surrounding community.

Under the direction of Dr. Martin I. Gaines, the Wind Ensemble has continued to explore new and engaging programming, incorporating contemporary and historically significant works into its concerts. Dr. Gaines, an experienced conductor and educator, brings a deep understanding of wind band traditions and an enthusiasm for innovative performances.
