UWL Jazz Concert

Two UWL Big Bands to Perform

The UW-La Crosse Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra are set to perform their first concerts of the 2024-2025 academic year. Both groups play back-to-back in the Bluffs Ballroom of the UWL Student Union on October 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Opening the concert is the Jazz Ensemble, directed by Professor Jon Ailabouni. The group plays notable jazz standards from composers such as Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, and Horace Silver. "This semester, the ensemble has been exploring the music of Kansas City jazz,” adds Ailabouni. “Tuesday’s performance includes two movements of the Kansas City Suite composed by Benny Carter and originally performed by the Count Basie Orchestra."

Directed by Dr. Jeff Erickson, the Jazz Orchestra follows with a program Erickson describes as a “combination of different styles, meters, and tempos.” The group follows a theme of “unusual meters” that will subvert expectations when feeling the pulse of the rhythm. Erickson states: “Music that has three beats per measure might bring to mind a waltz for many listeners, but these tunes are definitely not that.” Tunes in ‘three’ for this concert include Patty Darling’s Latin “On the Wing” and Steely Dan’s rock tune “Two Against Nature.” Yet another unusual meter is Don Goodwin Jr.’s “Tribute in Time” with its five-beat per measure structure.

Each group boasts students from a diverse range of majors across campus and will feature various musicians in solos and improvisation throughout the concert.
