Music & ...

The Art of Mary Ellen Childs: Part of the La Crosse New Music Festival

UWL presents "Music & ..." a multimedia, multi-sensory exhibition featuring the art of Mary Ellen Childs. Presented in conjunction with the La Crosse New Music Festival. All exhibitions, receptions, and artist talks are free and open to the public.

Opening Reception: November 1, 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. (UWL Art Gallery)

"Scent & Sound" Workshop: November 7 at 4 p.m. (Annett Recital Hall).

Mary Ellen Childs is a composer and multimedia artist acclaimed for her rhythmic, vibrant instrumental works and bold, kinetic compositions that integrate music, dance, and theatre in unexpected ways. Over the past thirty years, she has received numerous awards and fellowships, including one from Intermedia Arts and eight awards and a fellowship from the Minnesota State Arts Board.

The exhibition will feature several video monitors playing curated selections from Childs’ previous projects, digital frames showcasing videos from her research trips, multiple projections paired with sonic fields, and scent-based art installations.

Visitors will experience a wall-mounted scent and sound installation titled “Aromusic”—an array of scented, black-printed smell strips combined with audio—as well as artist sketchbooks and photographs of previous artworks.

Mary Ellen Childs will also visit the UWL campus to lead an interactive scent and sound workshop on Thursday, November 7 at 4 p.m. in Annett Recital Hall, Lowe Center for the Arts.

This exhibition is presented in conjunction with the 2024 La Crosse New Music Festival, hosted at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse from November 7 to 9. This project is partially funded by a grant from the City of La Crosse Arts Board.

Please note that the Lowe Center for the Arts is currently adjacent to a major parking ramp construction project. For more information on parking, visit uwlax.edu/vpa. Entry to the gallery is free and open to the public.
