Event #1: Faculty and Staff Development on Difficult Conversations 

  • Audience: Faculty and Staff 
  • Date: Monday, October 21 
  • Time: Noon – 1:00 pm 
  • Location: Online/Webinar format – join on your device or at the viewing room in Union 3120 
  • Objective: The Joint Committee for Civil Discourse (JCCD) will offer a faculty and staff development session focused on navigating difficult conversations. Facilitated by the Constructive Dialogue Institute, this webinar will address skill development for handling controversial topics while emphasizing principles of free speech. Participants will learn strategies under the PSI framework – Prepare, Support, Intervene – to foster constructive dialogue. 

 Event #2: Student Lunch and Learn: 1st Amendment & Critical Thinking 

  • Audience: Students 
  • Date: Tuesday, October 22 
  • Time: 11:00 am – 12:30 pm (Lunch provided for students/Registration Required) 
  • Location: Student Union 3110 
  • Objective: UWL Professors will host a student lunch and learn session titled "Critical Thinking Around the First Amendment." The session will explore fundamental questions about the First Amendment’s scope and its implications for free expression on campus. It will encourage students to critically engage with complex topics, emphasizing the value of diverse viewpoints. 

 Event #3: Keynote & Couch Conversation on Media Literacy with Richard Brown from Wisconsin Watch 

  • Audience: Campus-Wide 
  • Date: Wednesday, October 23 
  • Time: 2:00 pm – 4:15 pm 
    • 2:00 – 3:00 pm: Coffee and Cookies | Welcome/Be in Community | Keynote 
    • 3:15– 4:15 pm: Follow-up Session Focused on Engaging with the Audience (Q&A Conversation) with a Meet and Greet 
  • Location: Student Union Bluffs 
  • Objective: This event will delve into media literacy, exploring how different generations engage with media, its influence on society, and its role in upholding values of free expression. Richard Brown from Wisconsin Watch, a nonpartisan, nonprofit investigative news outlet, will serve as the keynote speaker. Participants will hear stories and think deeply about media consumption and its implications. 

The purpose of the Joint Committee on Civil Discourse is to further the mission of the university by promoting greater awareness of the values of free speech, freedom of expression, and academic freedom. In doing so, the committee advances the aims of the Board of Regents’ Policy Document 4-21, “Commitment to Academic Freedom and Freedom of Expression,” and related UW System and UWL policies.
