2024-2025 MFI Colloquium Series, Part I

hosted by the Menard Family Initiative

The Menard Family Initiative is excited to announce the upcoming Menard Family Initiative Student Discussion Colloquium, an exploration of the thought-provoking book, “Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy” by Joseph A. Schumpeter.

In the first installment, we will be discussing Part 2 of the book. We invite you to join us for a two-part discussion that promises to ignite your intellectual curiosity and provide unique opportunities for engagement with other students. See below for details.

MFI Colloquium Series Part One: Students will read and discuss Part 2 (around 100 pages) of the book – titled “Can Capitalism Survive?” Exchange perspectives, challenge paradigms, and broaden your understanding of capitalist and socialist systems, and the interplay between democracy and economic development. This will be a formal, moderated discussion with a larger group of 15-20 students.

  • All selected participants will receive a complimentary copy of " Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy."
  • As a token of our appreciation, participants will also be awarded a $50 scholarship upon selection to the November 15 event. This scholarship aims to recognize your dedication to intellectual discourse.
    • For those who continue to partake in Part two event, another $50 scholarship will be offered.

About the Book:

Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy by Joseph A. Schumpeter is a classic work in political economy that explores the dynamics of capitalist and socialist systems, and the interplay between democracy and economic development. First published in 1942, Schumpeter presents his theory of "creative destruction," arguing that capitalism's strength lies in its ability to innovate and transform, even at the cost of old structures. However, he controversially predicts capitalism’s eventual decline, suggesting that its success breeds social changes—particularly a more bureaucratic and intellectual class—that could lead to socialism. The book also critically examines Marxist thought and discusses the potential future of democratic systems. This third edition includes additional commentary on its enduring relevance in modern thought.
