Under City Streets: Archaeology in Urban Areas

Kathy Stevenson & MVAC staff will share stories of archaeological sites found beneath modern communities.

Archaeology might conjure up images of rural, exotic locations, but important archaeological sites are found in urban and suburban areas as well. In western Wisconsin, MVAC staff have worked for over forty years to identify and address sites in La Crosse and other communities that can be—literally—under city streets and in people’s backyards. Kathy Stevenson and other MVAC staff will talk about these complex situations, and working to balance respect for the past with planning and development for the future.

Dr. Katherine Stevenson is a Midwestern archaeologist who earned her PhD from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and has worked on a broad range of regional projects. She was MVAC’s first Regional Archaeologist when the Center opened in 1982, and she rejoined MVAC in 2010 as its Operations Manager.

Lecture is free and open to the public.
