Great Ideas for Teaching Students (G.I.F.T.S.)

part of the March 7, 2025 CATL Mini-Conference

Description: In this lunch-and-learn session, attendees will hear from two instructors who applied to share their GIFTS (great ideas for teaching students) with you all.

Scott Cooper (BIO) will share the results of research on successive relearning performed with Bill Cerbin and discuss how he integrates study methods in his First Year Seminar. While any course can incorporate relearning and study strategies, this GIFTS is particularly interesting to instructors of first year students as establishing study techniques early on can help make the students more successful in college.

Kate Lavelle (CST) will share about using Eagle Advantage (EA) competencies as the basis of reflection essays that debate students completed after completing debates in class. This GIFTS is particularly interesting to anyone who uses reflective writing and would like to help students consider broader reasons and implications for such reflection.
