Speech Gone Wild

Navigating Academic Freedom & Free Speech in 2025

This faculty and staff workshop delves into the evolving perceived and real tension between academic freedom, free speech, and Title VI along with our collective responsibility of ensuring inclusive efforts in today’s climate. As we navigate 2025, understanding the balance between these principles is critical in fostering a healthy academic environment.

Attendees will gain insight into key concepts surrounding free expression, academic freedom, and Title VI, and will explore how these intersect with bias, community expectations, and institutional,  anti-discrimination protections. This workshop will compare and contrast the rights of faculty, students, and staff in expressing ideas while addressing the responsibilities institutions have under Title VI.

By synthesizing best practices, participants will learn strategies to foster an academic environment that promotes free speech and academic freedom while ensuring a commitment to inclusion and equity. Through scenario-based discussions and interactive engagement, we will also tackle strategies for managing conflicts that may arise between free expression and institutional obligations in our current sociopolitical landscape.

Join us for an engaging exploration of these critical issues that shape today's academic and campus environment.
