Since 1968, OHP has collected over 1000 oral history interviews, many of which will ultimately be available for online streaming through our partnership with Murphy Library’s Digital Collections (MLDC). As we work our way through digitizing old interviews recorded on reel-to-reel or cassette tapes, we want to highlight some of our past projects and partnerships.

Conducted as part of senior thesis research in 2003 by UWL History student Chip GrawOzburn, this collection contains interviews with 8 women who played for the AAGPBL between 1943 - 1954. The interviewees are Annastasia Batikis, Jacqueline (Baumgart) Mattson, Mary (Froning) O’ Meara, Dolly (Vanderlip) Ozburn, Ellen (Ahrndt) Proefrock, Louise (Sauer) Erickson, Joyce (Hill) Westerman, and Ruth (Ries) Zillmer. The retired players describe their early lives, recruiting and try-outs for AAGPBL, their experience playing in the AAGPBL and a subsequent traveling league called Allington’s All-Americans. They also reflect on the state of women’s athletics in the early 2000s.

Conducted in 2018-2019, these interviews document the devastation caused by a series of catastrophic floods along the Kickapoo River and Coon Creek watersheds in August - September 2018, along with local community responses. The interviews were conducted as part of the Driftless Writing Center’s “Stories From The Floods” community storytelling project. OHP and MLDC are providing access to a selected set of oral histories from the project.
