For instructors and students.
Are you tired of hearing that students are interested only in how their education can help them get a job? Let’s face it, students receive messaging from all directions that their university degree is a direct path to success (or failure!) in their future career. What they may not realize is that on average, Americans will hold 12 different jobs in a lifetime—how do we prepare them for just one? And what if their dream job twenty years from now does not even exist today? Regardless of these facts, higher education is not intended to be career prep; a liberal arts education is designed to create well-informed citizens who can work together to solve our world’s problems.
Now what if we told you that all these goals can be achieved—simultaneously—by emphasizing something you are already probably doing in your courses? It’s true—at UWL, we can work smarter, not harder, by incorporating the Eagle Advantage into any course.
What employers want and what our future world needs is the same thing—a large population of adaptable critical thinkers, capable of problem solving with teams of diverse populations. We need leaders and collaborators who can communicate, work with constantly changing technology, and self-direct to develop the careers of the future. These are all examples of Eagle Advantage career competencies.
Your courses likely include activities and assignments designed to help students develop these competencies already. By making the connection more explicit, your students will have a leg up on their career trajectory without sacrificing any of the true goals of higher education. They will also develop ways of articulating what they’ve learned in your classes to others, including employers. It’s a win-win.
