Discussion Groups
Our discussion groups encourage open and free discussion on readings and current events related to our topics of interest as well as encouraging other associated interdisciplinary topics. The goal of the discussions will be to encourage students to think critically and in an economic fashion about problems and current issues.
Fall 2024
The Menard Family Initiative (MFI) is happy to announce our Fall 2024 student programs which are open to all UWL students and provide opportunities to earn up to a $250 scholarship and qualify to compete in an essay contest with awards ranging from $500 to $1,000:
The MFI Discussion Group Series will entail twice-monthly group discussions on economics, economic history, entrepreneurship, culture, and politics over free dinners at various local restaurants. The program will generally take place every other Monday or Wednesday from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM and will begin the week of September 16th (the third week of classes). Participants will have the opportunity to earn up to a $200 scholarship based on the following criteria:
- $50 for attending at least 5 out of 6 discussion group meetings.
- Up to $100 for attending other MFI events in Fall 2024 (including guest lectures, meals, and presentations).
- $50 for exceptional engagement and effort in all MFI programs and events.
Discussion group students will be eligible to participate in an essay contest. Contestants must synthesize what they learned throughout the semester from the MFI discussions and events to address an economics or policy question. Final essays will be due Sunday, December 8th. Prizes for top essay submissions will be awarded as follows:
- First place: $1,000
- Second place: $750
- Third place: $500
