College of Science & Health (CSH)
Centers & Institutes
The college is home to an array of specialized interdisciplinary centers, institutes, and other initiatives
Center on Disability Health and Adapted Physical Activity
The primary mission of the Center is to conduct a variety of quality physical activity and education programs serving children, youth, and adults with disabilities. Individualized instruction is provided to persons who may not be able to safely or successfully participate in programs available in the general community. The Center also serves as a preparation site for teaching majors who are interested in service, mentoring, or volunteer opportunities.
Health Science Interprofessional Research Center
The center was created to support and further develop interprofessional applied research among UWL students, faculty, and community partners, in tandem with national and international scientists. The center provides a space to link faculty and students from multiple UWL allied health professional programs. Currently, faculty from Occupational, Recreational, and Physical Therapies as well as Exercise and Sport Science serve in the HSIRC with plans to expand partnerships across campus. The facility service dog program named "Dr. Wags" is the first collaborative HSIRC project.
La Crosse Exercise & Health Program
Our Adult Fitness and Cardiac Rehabilitation programs are conducted right here on the UWL campus and participants have access to some of the finest exercise facilities in the La Crosse area. The programs are all medically supervised and staffed by students in our Clinical Exercise Physiology masters program. All programs are open to the public and we currently have over 125 community members, faculty, and staff enrolled.
La Crosse Institute for Movement Science
The goal is to bring both scientists and clinicians together towards a common goal of movement science research and clinical service. Since our laboratories are housed in a Physical Therapy program, much current research centers around injury and performance where we study loading on joints and tissues and try to alter movement performance to reduce injury. LIMS is active in research with over 100 published studies since its inception in 2005.
UWL/Mayo Clinic Health System Partnership
A Mayo Clinic Health System and UWL research agreement announced in 2019 is helping improve the health and wellness of the Coulee Region. It enables researchers at both — students and professionals — to work together while preparing the next generation of scientists, innovators and health care providers.
The collaboration adds to several previous successful health care associations in medical research and education. Among them:
- Joint faculty appointments, degree programs and research projects
- Cross-organizational education events and forums
- Mayo Clinic Health System and UWL Youth Sports Safety Symposium
The collaboration gives UWL students projects to research and Mayo professionals opportunities for additional experimenting.
River Studies Center
The precious freshwater resources on the planet and the challenges surrounding them have created an intense need for careers in water. The UWL River Studies Center brings together students and faculty from a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs to work on freshwater challenges in partnership with state and federal organizations.
UW-La Crosse has joined the Freshwater Collaborative, a one-of-a-kind higher education training and research program in partnership with UW System campuses. Through a multidisciplinary course of study across campuses, students will engage in training to address the water challenges facing the world while getting the training to meet future water-focused workforce needs.
Tourism Research Institute
The mission of the Tourism Research Institute at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is to conduct and facilitate tourism and recreation related research activities.
