UWL travel expert shares seven tips to keep vacationing affordable
Peak travel season is in full swing, but that doesn’t mean your wallet has to take a hit. Whether you’re planning your next getaway or reminiscing over past expenses, UW-La Crosse’s travel expert Dan Plunkett, has some savvy advice to stretch your travel budget without compromising on experience.
Plunkett, UWL associate professor and director of UWL’s Tourism Research Institute, frequently shares his expertise and insights related to event planning, tourism, and outdoor recreation. Here are his top tips for budget-friendly travel:
Budget-friendly travel tips
Escape in the off-season: Consider destinations during off-peak times. For example, some popular destinations in Mexico are more humid in the summer and resorts may be offering discounted rates compared to their busier winter and spring seasons, says Plunkett. “If you can tolerate the heat, you’ll have a good time and spend less money.”
Avoid tourist traps: Avoiding tourist centers can save you money on dining and souvenirs. Plunkett suggests exploring locations further into or out of town to discover authentic local experiences at lower costs.
Be strategic with lodging: Opt for accommodations outside city centers where prices are lower and parking might even be free. "Look for places near public transport for easy access to attractions," recommends Plunkett.
Pack smart: Beat airport and convenience store prices by packing your own snacks. While you can’t bring large liquids through airport security, you can bring food. "It’s a simple way to save and ensure you have healthy options on hand," Plunkett points out. Also, prep your snack pack the day before as you know you’ll be short on time as you try to get out the door on the day of travel!
Time your travel: Plan to hit the road or fly out on Saturday. Then, stay at hotels and visit attractions Sunday-Thursday to avoid peak demand and inflated prices at hotels and attractions on weekends. "Traveling on weekends and staying weekdays can lead to significant savings," says Plunkett.
Explore nearby: You might be surprised by the hidden gems within only about 250 miles of your home, notes Plunkett. Exploring these spots within a 4-5 hour drive cuts down on travel expenses and also allows for spontaneous getaways.
Opt for direct flights: While connecting flights can sometimes be cheaper, they come with risks that can lead to more time and money. Delays between connecting flights happen all the time, and if you miss your connecting flight, you’ll spend even more time traveling and less time at your destination. Direct flights minimize travel time and maximize your vacation hours, says Plunkett.
