Join us monthly as we celebrate a different community on campus. UWL Celebration Months amplifies voices from the many vibrant cultures and communities on campus. Join us throughout the year as we celebrate our friends and neighbors and gain a deeper understanding of our community.

The purpose of this project is to give others on our campus, in the surrounding community, and anyone that visits the UWL website a chance to learn more about different experiences and perspectives of the community that we are celebrating on any given month.

White House statement from President Biden referring to A Proclamation on National Native American Heritage Month, 2023:

"During National Native American Heritage Month, we recognize the invaluable contributions of Native peoples that have shaped our country and honor the hundreds of Tribal Nations who continue exercising their inherent sovereignty as vital members of the overlapping system of governments in the United States. We also recommit to supporting Tribal sovereignty; upholding the Federal Government’s solemn trust and treaty responsibilities; and working in partnership with Tribal Nations to advance prosperity, dignity, and safety for all Native peoples."

UWL Indigenous Land Recognition Statement

We would like to recognize that the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse occupies the land of the Ho-Chunk people. Please take a moment to celebrate and honor this ancestral Ho-Chunk land, and the sacred lands of all indigenous peoples.

Truman T. Lowe Center for the Arts

UWL dedicates Center for the Arts to artist, alum Truman Lowe. Truman Lowe (‘69) was a nationally renowned sculptor and educator. Raised in the
Ho-Chunk community near Black River Falls, WI,
he made art that honors his heritage and the woodland environment of this region.

Lowe Center for the Arts Truman Lowe (‘69) was a nationally renowned sculptor and educator. Raised in the Ho-Chunk community near Black River Falls, WI, he made art that honors his heritage and the woodland environment of this region. A professor at UW-Madison for 35 years, Lowe also curated contemporary art at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC (2000-2008). His life’s work, together with his generosity of spirit, contributed greatly to the advancement of Native American art and culture.
