IRS Verification of Non-filing

An IRS Verification of Non-filing Letter provides proof that you did not meet the requirements to have needed to file a 1040 form for the year requested. The process to get a Verification of Non-filing Letter is the same as getting a Tax Return Transcript.

If you have filed taxes in previous years, you can use the online tool at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript to request an electronic or paper Verification of Non-filing Letter. You may also call 1-800-908-9946 for an automated phone system.

If you have never filed taxes, then you will need to mail a form 4506-T to the IRS office. Complete applicable lines 1a to 5b, check the box at the end of line 7, enter '12/31/2021' on line 9 (if requesting to complete your 2023-24 verification file), complete the signature section and mail to the IRS. Please note that for line 5b, you may put your ten digit student ID number for tracking and identifying purposes.
