Murphy Library's New Zine Reading Room
By Mike Olson
Step into Room 113 at Murphy Library and enter the vibrant world of zines - handcrafted, self-published works that capture authentic voices and creative expression. Our new Zine Reading Room showcases both browsable collections and free take-home zines to jumpstart your personal library.
What Makes Zines Special?
Zines (short for "fanzines") are DIY publications that embody creative freedom and grassroots expression. These handcrafted works blend text, images, found objects, and artistic elements to share stories, ideas, and perspectives often overlooked by mainstream media. From mental health advocacy to whimsical illustrations of costumed hot dogs, zines tackle every imaginable topic with raw authenticity.
A Valuable Resource for Academia
Beyond their creative appeal, zines serve as powerful primary sources, especially for studying marginalized voices and underground movements. Their DIY nature challenges traditional publishing hierarchies while offering unique insights into diverse communities and perspectives.
