Student funding supports Murphy Library for over a decade
Fall of 2023 has zoomed by. Since day one of this semester, Murphy Library has been near capacity with students busy studying and collaborating. Speaking of students, 13 years have gone by since the library received its first critical infusion of money from our student population. A new student differential tuition funding initiative was created around 2010, with funding allocations managed through a standing committee of the Student Senate called AIDAC (Academic Initiatives Differential Allocation Committee). AIDAC provides a voice for UW-La Crosse’s students through the allocation of tuition dollars to programs whose purpose is built on the foundation of student needs in the areas of advising, diversity, internationalization and research.
You might wonder, how does AIDAC funding benefit Murphy Library and UWL students? Almost every year, students consistently request access to far more electronic resources, such as new databases, ejournals, ebooks and streaming video. Last year, UWL student funding assistance helped the library provide access to $142,024 worth of electronic resources, such as the digital New York Times, Vogue Archives (ProQuest), Kanopy Streaming Video, Elsevier ScienceDirect Freedom Collection, and others. Also important to students is for the library to provide additional building hours. Another $4,164 in student supported funding allowed the library to remain open an extra four hours each week during the regular fall and spring semesters, offering additional morning, evening and weekend hours. Learn more about our student-funded resources here.
A hearty “thank you” from the folks in Murphy Library goes out to all UWL students as their funding provides the necessary means for the library to continue offering the excellent resources and services they expect from us.
Best of luck in the remaining weeks of the fall semester!
