Celebrating UWL Alumna Sharon Evers and the Olympics

Olympic Torch from the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay.

Sharon Evers, UWL alumna from the classes of 1960 and 1965, has spent much of her life immersed in the world of the Olympics. Known as the “Olympic Lady” in her hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee; Sharon’s passion for the Games is reflected in her extensive collection of Olympic memorabilia and her unforgettable experience as a torchbearer for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Games.

The Olympic Torch Relay is a time-honored tradition that connects the modern Games with their ancient origins. The flame is lit in Olympia, Greece, and then carried by torchbearers across countries and continents, symbolizing peace, unity, and the enduring human spirit. In 1996, as the torch made its way to the Atlanta Summer Games, Sharon had the unique opportunity to be part of this global journey. Carrying the torch through Knoxville for just six-tenths of a mile, she became a small yet significant link in the relay’s chain, deepening her connection to the Olympic spirit.

Beyond her role as a torchbearer, Sharon has spent years collecting thousands of Olympic-themed items, from pins to posters. Her collection is a testament to her enduring love for the Games and the values they represent.

Now, you have the chance to explore some of Sharon’s incredible Olympic collection at Murphy Library. The display, features key pieces from her collection, including the very torch she carried in 1996. Alongside these Olympic treasures, you’ll also find memorabilia from her time at UWL, offering a more personal look at Sharon’s journey. We invite you to visit and discover the Olympic spirit—and a bit of UWL history—through Sharon Evers’ eyes.
