Crawford County, WI – Historic Store and Apothecary
At first glance this looks like a pile of garbage, but it’s actually from a late 19th century feature related to a store in Crawford County, Wisconsin. Tax and deed records, old maps, and newspaper accounts showed that this was a store and apothecary. When the area was excavated, dozens of inkwells and tobacco tins were discovered, along with medicine bottles of various sizes. A foundation was found as well. One advantage of historic archaeology is that written documents can help solve the mystery of “What is it?”
