Rice Lake, WI – Mounds
This photo from Rice Lake, Wisconsin, is a prime example of urban archaeology, where development has encroached upon a mound group. The group reportedly once contained at least 49 mounds. Some of the mounds were excavated in 1890 and 1891 by the Bureau of American Ethnology. Today the remaining 12 mounds are preserved in Indian Mound Park and are protected as a catalogued burial site.
