 Engineering the play: Coach builds players up for success in college, life Posted 10:28 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 UW-L Football Head Coach Joel Dettwiler recalls the day he picked up the phone — covered with dust after a long day working at a landfill. He was a construction engineer for a firm based in Madison when he got the call from UW-Platteville asking if he’d rather be a coach. “It was a spontaneous decision,” he says. “I was following my heart so to speak. What I yearned for was togetherness. Dan, ’88, hurried to the back, passing heaps of quilt patterns and brightly colored fabric decorating the 4,400-square-foot space. For nearly 15 years, his wife, Shelley, ‘89, had expanded the shop, gradually increasing fabric choices, inventory and staff. She studied up on the trendiest quilt patterns and eventually designed her own to be printed professionally and shipped all over the U.S. and Canada.
