He was a construction engineer for a firm based in Madison when he got the call from UW-Platteville asking if he’d rather be a coach. “It was a spontaneous decision,” he says. “I was following my heart so to speak. What I yearned for was togetherness. Dan, ’88, hurried to the back, passing heaps of quilt patterns and brightly colored fabric decorating the 4,400-square-foot space. For nearly 15 years, his wife, Shelley, ‘89, had expanded the shop, gradually increasing fabric choices, inventory and staff. She studied up on the trendiest quilt patterns and eventually designed her own to be printed professionally and shipped all over the U.S. and Canada. He loved to learn, pursue political debate and explore international relations, recalls Political Science Professor Joe Heim. Today Samatar, ’78, is taking those interests to the political landscape of his native Somalia where he recently made a run for president.
