New campus center provides health career options
UW-La Crosse students contemplating the health profession have a new option when exploring careers in the field.
The Pre+Health Student Resource Center, 1140 Centennial Hall, provides students an opportunity to learn about graduate school applications, academic options in pre-health paths, along with networking options with various local and regional organizations, such as ScribeAmerica, LHI, Scenic Rivers AHEC and more.
UWL Provost Betsy Morgan commissioned a group of faculty, staff and students to improve ways to work with students headed toward graduate programs in the health professions. While most of those students are enrolled in the College of Science and Health, others come from the College of Liberal Studies and College of Business Administration.
“While we are proud of our students’ successes in these areas, we found areas that could be improved – specifically in terms of support and resources,” says Josh Bench, coordinator of the Pre+Health Student Resource Center. “Through advising, workshops, events, web resources, newsletters, and other means, we help UWL pre-health students be more aware and more successful.”
Students and area healthcare organizations will get an opportunity to see what the new hub, part of the Academic Advising Center and Career Services, has to offer when the Pre+Health Student Resource Center celebrates its grand opening Wednesday, Oct. 17, with "Prepping for a Health Career." The event starts at 6 p.m. in 1400 Centennial Hall, with breakout sessions starting at 6:30 in 1400, 1401, 1404 and 1142 Centennial.
The grand opening will have more than 15 employers and on-campus resources. At least 100 students are expected. Faculty and staff are welcome to talk with organizations that recruit pre-health students. Hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be available in 1142 Centennial Hall.
Bench says the Pre+Health Student Resource Center has been busy in its first month, not only advising students, but partnering with student clubs, area health care professionals and service organizations. “So far, we have gotten many positive emails and passing comments from students, faculty and staff,” he notes. “I would sum up those comments as, ‘What a great idea!’” Area healthcare employers have been eager to attend the grand opening and meet students, Bench says. “It’s a clear sign that the new center will help to meet the increased need for health care professionals,” he notes. Bench says the opening is the first major example of how the center will help students. They will be able to explore career options, expand their network, develop alternative plans, and get help navigating application processes.
