More than 23 La Crosse area students will have financial assistance this academic year thanks to an event at UW-L — the AAUW Art Fair on the Green. The 55th annual AAUW Art Fair on the Green runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 27, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 28, on the campus mall at 16th and State streets at UW-L. Ninety-two artists from the Midwest will display sculpture, jewelry, photography, woodwork, paintings, ceramics, glass art, fiber art, weaving, garden art, pottery mixed media and more. Everything is available for purchase except some student art on display. In addition to supporting the arts, the juried art fair is AAUW’s main fundraiser for scholarships.
All proceeds from the annual event sponsored by the American Association of University Women go toward scholarships for area high school graduates and college students. Last summer the event raised $25,000 that was distributed in scholarships to more than 23 area students to use this fall. With the funds raised from last year's art fair, AAUW also made donations to local educational organizations, including the Self-Sufficiency Program, the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association and the LEAD Program at the YWCA . The fair also includes concessions featuring That Salad Place selections, frozen cheesecake on a stick, kettle corn, crepes and more. Inkapirka, an ethnic music group from Racine, will perform and a raffle will include approximately 70 donated items. The art fair is judged and the top three pieces will receive a cash price. Fairgoers vote by secret ballot for their favorite artist. The top vote-getter wins the People's Choice cash award. Children ages 12 and under are free. For those age 13 and up, the cost is $4. Tickets are good for both days.
