Jazz in the Park’ swings into 44th season

The sound of great big band jazz returns to La Crosse this summer. The 44th season of Jazz in the Park featuring the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra takes the stage Saturday, June 2. All events are free and open to all. The band, directed by retired UWL Professor Greg Balfany, is supported by grants and gifts from listeners. This year’s season features several guest artists and a new street dance venue: [caption id="attachment_52291" align="alignright" width="300"]various musical acts collage. Moon tunes[/caption] Saturday, June 2, 6:30 p.m. Caledonia Street Block Party. North La Crosse hosts its first block party featuring a street dance with the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra. The band will perform dance band music from all eras and all styles. The party starts at 2 p.m. with the band’s downbeat coming at 6:30. The Swinging Pearls vocal trio headlines the event. Rain Site: Pearl Street Brewery Sunday, June 17, 7:00 p.m. Jazz in the Park at Riverside Park Vocalists Cathy Reitz and Tim Henke are featured with the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra. Henke’s selections include Pat Boone’s “Stairway to Heaven” and Frank Sinatra’s “Luck Be A Lady.” Reitz’s features include Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger and “I Want to Be Happy” from Sarah Vaughn. The band will introduce several selections that have not been performed in La Crosse before. Rain Site: Cavalier Theater Tuesday, June 26, 5:30 p.m. Jazz in the Park at Riverside Park for Moon Tunes The Coulee Region All Star High School Jazz Band, joins the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra for this special Moon Tunes presentation. Selections include an inspiring patriotic section some favorites reconfigured. trumpeterSunday, July 15, 7 p.m. Jazz in the Park at Riverside Park Internationally acclaimed trumpet virtuoso Rob Parton joins the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra with his high note and jazz artistry. Parton brings his special arrangements created for his unique talent.
