The Alumni Association has hired Alumni Engagement Coordinator Emma Sutkay who will start Monday, Jan. 5 thanks to the commitment of the UW-L Alumni Association board of directors. Sutkay will direct student alumni programs and work with UW-L staff and the Alumni Association Board to increase the visibility of the Alumni Association on campus. "Emma Sutkay was not only impressive during her phone interview, but she blew us out of the water during her campus visit,” says Janie Morgan, executive director of the Alumni Association. “She is bright, articulate, has great energy and will relate well to not only the Student Alumni Ambassadors, but also the entire campus community. We are excited to have her join our team in January.” Sutkay was attracted to the position because it blends working with students and alumni. “A lot of times the focus is on one or the other,” says Sutkay. “To have engaged alumni, you need engaged students on campus. Then, when they’re out in the real world, they’ll want to come back.” Sutkay, a May 2014 graduate of University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, brings experience working with both alumni and students. As a College of Liberal Arts student ambassador at Minnesota, she worked with alumni of the college, conducting one-on-one interviews with them about their student experience and how they’ve used their degree. “That got me interested in working with alumni,” she says. “I heard amazing stories from them about what they were doing in their positions and how they were making a difference.” At U of M, Sutkay was also a mentor and instructor for a class all first-year students had to take. Sutkay says this is where she became more interested in working with college students. “I really enjoyed being a part of each student's unique journey by helping them to develop their goals and find their passions,” she says. “College students are at such an exciting time in their lives, and that makes working with them a truly rewarding and inspiring experience.” The communications major also brings experience in social media and public relations from an internship at The TwinWest Chamber of Commerce in Plymouth, Minnesota. Sutkay says she is “beyond excited” to join the UW-L community and meet faculty, staff, students and alumni. “Everyone is so passionate and excited about what they do,” she says. “I look forward to feeding off that energy, working hard, and doing great things together for the campus community"
