In 2013 the UW-L Foundation will see some changes — namely the absence of two long-term employees. Al Trapp, president of the foundation, will retire in June and Pat Stephens, director of collegiate gifts, will retire in November. They were both honored and thanked for their service to the UW-L Foundation and university during the Political Science & Public Administration Event Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Top of the Park, Best Western Inn on the Park in Madison. More than 100 UW-L political science alumni and friends gathered at for the annual event, including local legislators, alumni legislators and two members of the UW System Board of Regents. Trapp was given an honorary membership in the Political Science Department. He was the primary driving force behind the annual alumni event. “You can tell by the number of people here, it’s been successful,” explained Joe Heim, long-time political science professor. Stephens, who started at UW-L in 1978, was also recognized for his service. “We are proud of you and thankful for all you have done,” said Janie Spencer, executive director of the UW-L Alumni Association. Both Stephens and Trapp were also thanked for their support of the Golden Key International Honour Society. UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow gave an update on campus news including building plans, UW-L College of Business Administration’s recent Council for Higher Education Accreditation award and the university’s new massive open enrollment online course (MOOC). They’ve hired several new faculty through attrition, retirements and funds from the Growth, Quality, and Access. The program, which started in fall 2008, increased tuition and allowed UW-L to continue hiring faculty and staff to provide more classes and support for students from enrollment to graduation. The increase in faculty helps cut class sizes and offer students more academic choices, said Manrique. “It’s an exciting time for the department,” she said. Gow thanked legislators again for their bi-partisan support of the Growth, Quality and Access plan. So far the university has hired more than 170 faculty and staff through the growth plan. “We have not forgotten what you’ve done for us,” he said.
