Prof’s work displayed in Madison

UWL Associate Professor of Art John Ready has taken one of his large jewelry sculptures to Monona Terrace in Madison. Ready is one of seven Midwestern artists selected to show their work at the busy capital city spot. The annual exhibit began in 2014 as a pilot project to showcase the William T. Evjue Rooftop Gardens as a “must see” destination in Madison. It was expanded last year and became an annual program. Ready’s piece, “Cluster,” has been installed at the Olin Terrace at the front of the building. The work — created with ordinary materials like used pots, pans, lamps and the like — is a large-scale piece of jewelry, a ring, sitting on the ground. “This is a wonderful opportunity and will be seen by thousands of folks over the next year,” notes Ready. He says the piece is framed by Monona Terrace from one direction and the State Capitol from the other. Ready’s work will be exhibited at the building’s front through May 2017; the six other rooftop pieces will be shown through November. It’s not the first time Ready has created large pieces of jewelry for public spaces. His work graced the Milwaukee Riverwalk from 2009-2011. He also exhibited pieces at the Rochester, Minnesota, Art Center; the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art and Olbrich Botanical Gardens. Ready, who is director of the University Art Gallery along with his teaching duties, works out of his studio in La Crescent. He received a bachelor’s degree from UWL, a Master of Arts in metalsmithing and jewelry from Iowa State University, and a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from Stony Brook, New York, University.
