Presentation on tissue engineering to beat disease set on campus
A UW-Madison distinguished professor will share how researchers are creating engineered tissue to help combat diseases.

Kristyn Masters, Vilas Distinguished Professor and vice chair of UW–Madison’s Department of Biomedical Engineering, will discuss approaches used in her lab to create engineered platforms that imitate features of healthy and diseased tissues. The creations enable researchers to determine the cues responsible for regulating tissue development and disease progression. Researchers have applied these disease-mimicking platforms to understand the signals that drive progression of diseases such as heart-valve calcification and cancer.
Masters earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a doctorate from Rice University — both in chemical engineering. In her lab, researchers combine engineering tools with biological knowledge to create in vitro models of disease, with a specific focus on cardiovascular dysfunction and cancer. In addition to her research, Masters has received numerous teaching awards, and holds leadership roles in teaching and mentoring programs.
The presentation is being held in partnership with UWL Alumni Association. Free parking is available in lot C-12, next to the UWL Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. If the lot fills, additional free parking will be available on level one of the parking ramp.
