9th annual UW-La Crosse event features seven high schools

The UW-La Crosse Screaming Eagles Marching Band will host its 9th annual High School Band Day Saturday, Sept. 14.

The band will be joined by approximately 400 musicians, color guard and twirlers from seven area high schools. Schools participating include: Bangor High School, Holmen High School, La Crosse Central High School, La Crosse Logan High School, Prairie du Chien High School, Rochester Mayo High School and Tomah High School.

During the morning rehearsal, participating students will receive a music performance clinic by Ward Miller. Miller is a nationally known band clinician whose marching band arrangements are performed by Division I college marching bands around the country. He has served as the musical arranger, drill writer and assistant director of the Macy’s Great American Marching Band in New York City since 2006. From 2014-19, Miller served as the brass caption head for the World Class Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps of La Crosse. Every year under his leadership, the Blue Stars’ horn line has placed in the top 12 and made finals.

The high school bands will join the Screaming Eagles to perform the Star Spangled Banner during the pre-game performance. At halftime the combined musicians will perform music arranged by Miller. The songs to be performed are: “Word Up,” “Good to be Alive” and a patriotic medley. The Screaming Eagles Marching Band will also perform its field show at halftime featuring Super Hero movie themes.

The pre-game show will begin at 12:40 p.m. before the 1 p.m. kickoff. The UWL Eagles football team will be playing non-conference foe Illinois Western University. Tickets are available at the gate.
