Delegation from Chinese province visits UWL

A delegation from Harbin University of Science and Technology (HUST) in Harbin, China visited UW-La Crosse Tuesday, July 2 as part of a broader visit to meet with UW System and Wisconsin Technical College System officials to discuss possible future collaborations including faculty and student exchanges. The group from the Heilongjiang Province of China toured campus, met with university leaders and explored downtown La Crosse.

UW System signed a memorandum of understanding with the provincial government of Heilongjiang Province (HLJ) in 2017 to develop programs of benefit to UW System institutions and universities in China's northernmost province.

Miranda Panzer, UWL international student advisor, joined a UW delegation on a trip to Heilongjiang Province in April to continue to work to expand short-term programming and partnerships with the province, as well as discuss recruitment of degree-seeking students. She also connected with several UWL alumni living there.

Wisconsin has shared a "sister state" relationship with Heilongjiang Province since 1982, which was recognized recently by Governor Evers during an official HLJ government delegation visit to Wisconsin in January 2019. In January the Wisconsin Technical College System signed an agreement with HLJ Province to develop opportunities for cooperation and exchange with interested WTCS institutions. The delegation also met with Western Technical College officials on Wednesday, July 3 to discuss future collaboration opportunities.

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls has been working with HUST since 2015 and Carolyn Brady, International Partnership and Outreach Programs at UW-River Falls, has assisted in developing and coordinating the UW System delegation visits to the Heilongjiang province of China the past four years. UWL Director of Admissions Corey Sjoquist went in 2016 and Panzer went twice in 2017 and 2018 before her third trip in April 2019.

  • Dr. Fang Wenbin, Vice President, HUST (Visited UWRF/WI in 2017
and hosted meetings in Harbin since 2016)
  • Dr. Wang Yuqi, Vice-Dean, HUST School of Economics and
