Monstrous love and becoming woman focus of May 3 English colloquium

Karen Hart, English, will present "The Ethos of Monstrous Love and 'Becoming Woman' in Robert Musil’s 'Man Without Qualities'" at a lecture from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, in 113 Wimberly Hall. Hart's research investigates the ethical potential of what Gilles Deleuze calls "becoming woman" as it plays out through Robert Musil’s quasi-incestuous siblings Agathe and Ulrich. Hart will discuss how "becoming woman" transforms and challenges a life negating "'master consciousness" — a hegemonic mode of thought that forces the complexities of life into hierarchies such as male and female, and thought and feeling, for the purpose of mastering both nature and people. Metamorphosis out of this type of consciousness is at the base of Musil’s ethical guide for behavior. The presentation of the English Department's William J. and Yvonne Hyde Colloquium Series is free and open to the public. To arrange for disability accommodations, contact english@uwlax.edu or call 785.8295. For more information, visit http://rhetor.blogs.com/english.

UW-L in the news

A summary of some of the stories about UW-La Crosse spotted in the news. "UW-L officials encourage talking, counseling," WXOW, April 19. Police arrested a man, armed with an unloaded shotgun, on the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse campus Thursday. The University has yet to release the man's age or identity. He is still undergoing psychiatric evaluation. UW-L Vice Chancellor&Dean of Students Paula Knudson said anxiety among students is on the rise and encourages students to seek counseling if they need help coping ... "'Battle of the sexes' at forefront of UW-L play," La Crosse Tribune, April 21. ... This play, which opens on Friday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, is a collision of styles, alternately hilarious and horrifying ... "UW-La Crosse mycologists find 3 new species of chanterelle mushroom," Wisconsin Public Radio, April 23. A University of Wisconsin-La Crosse professor and his team have found that a popular edible mushroom is not what people thought it was ... (audio clip) "UW System officials defend big cash reserve," La Crosse Tribune, April 23. University of Wisconsin officials on Monday defended their decision to maintain a $648.2 million budget surplus even as they raised tuition for students...Brent Smith, president of the UW Board of Regents, said Monday the UW System is following prudent accounting practices by keeping that much cash on hand ... "Our view: Uproar over surplus not helpful," Editorial, La Crosse Tribune, April 25. Is saving money for a rainy day good public policy? The answer — in Wisconsin anyway — appears to be based on which side of the political aisle you sit ... Yet this week Republican leaders scolded University of Wisconsin System officials when they learned that the system has $648 million in cash reserves. Apparently it's proper for one agency to have funds and not another ... "Chancellor: UW-L also has tuition surplus," La Crosse Tribune, April 24. A surplus of tuition funds in the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's yearly budget doesn't mean the college is hoarding cash, UW-L's top official said. UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow released a report Wednesday showing a budget balance of nearly $28 million from tuition payments. The biggest single chunk of the fund balance is reserved for the salaries of nearly 200 faculty and staff, hired through the university's Growth, Quality and Access program. "We don't sit idly by and let these monies accumulate," Gow said. "This is a very strategic process" ...   Thanks artwork.
