International Tea fundraiser showcases talent, traditions of UW-L students

The Office of International Education hosted an OIE International Tea Fundraiser Wednesday, April 25, in the Cameron Hall of Nations in Centennial Hall. International students showcased their talents, including demonstrating some of the traditions of the Japanese Tea Ceremony and playing a variety of musical instruments, at the event. Proceeds from the fundraiser help support the OIE’s Ambassador’s Roundtable Fund. This fund helps to pay expenses when the office sponsors guest speakers, delegations from partner universities, visiting scholars, Fulbright recipients, study abroad program representatives and providers, and parents of international students. Monies raised also helps pay for accommodations, meals and local transportation. "The University has always prided itself in its global influence throughout the campus and the City of La Crosse," OIE Assistant Director Sandy Sieber says. The Roundtable Fund helps make it possible for UW-L to sponsor events such as the Rhodes Scholar Prabhat Patnaik’s presentation in February and the visit of students and faculty from Fukuoka University of Education in Japan in March. OIE hopes to annually raise $5,000-10,000 for the Ambassador’s Roundtable Fund to help build partnerships and solidify relations globally. UW-L students honor UW System president

The UW-La Crosse Student Association has honored UW System President Kevin P. Reilly. Student senators gave Reilly the Higher Education Advocate of the Year Award at their Wednesday, April 25, student senate meeting. For the past four years the UW-L Student Association has awarded an Advocate of the Year to someone who has shown an outstanding commitment to higher education and specifically to UW-L. Reilly was chosen to receive the award for his leadership of the UW System during “rigorous times,” says Student Association President Madisson Heinze. “We are honoring President Reilly not only because he has been a strong proponent of the UW System in a tumultuous political and financial time in our state’s history, but his leadership, guidance, and voice have provided an effective model of professional advocacy to our student body and our institution,” says Heinze. Reilly has served as the UW System’s top administrator since 2004. Past recipients of the Higher Education Advocate of the Year award include La Crosse Tribune Publisher Rusty Cunningham; State Sen. Jennifer Shilling, D-La Crosse; and UW System Regent and La Crosse Attorney Brent Smith. The play includes a singing master from Lucca, the most accomplished courtesan in all of Venice, a drunken German and Signor Banchieri himself. An intermezzo of songs imitating animals, including the remarkable "Song of the Birds" by Clément Jannequin, will also be included. The play, under the direction of Terence Kelly, is free and open to the public. Confucian reading of Aristotle's rhetoric is theme of May 4 presentation

Haixia Lan, English, will conclude the 2011-12 William J. and Yvonne Hyde English Department Colloquium Series with the presentation "Enthymeme as Diagrammatic: A Confucian Reading of Aristotle's Rhetoric." Her talk from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, in 113 Wimberly Hall, will focus on Confucius' rhetorical thinking based on an interpretation of Aristotle's rhetoric-as-enthymematic. Lan will discuss three characteristics of this enthymematic or rhetorical thinking — empathetic, appropriate and heuristic — in Greek epieikeia, kairos, and topoi; and in Chinese ren, yi , and li. Lan will address the idea that rhetorical activities are processes through which people use public forums to deliberate about matters that are of consequence to the community for the purpose of inventing probable knowledge, forming probable judgments and making probable decisions. Lan proposes that understanding Confucius' rhetoric this way can shed light on both similarities and differences between the thinking behind the discursive practices — written and oral —educators use to teach Chinese students and the discursive practices with which they are familiar. The event is free and open to the public. To arrange for disability accommodations, email english@uwlax.edu or call 785.8295. For more information, visit http://rhetor.blogs.com/english.
