Posted 4:33 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012

This week's news and events.

New university branding campaign underway; tagline, logos announced

“Surround yourself with distinction. Surround yourself with UW-La Crosse.” That’s the theme of the university’s new branding initiative. The theme, or “tagline,” is the product of extensive work conducted over the past year and a half by the University Branding Committee. Formed in the spring of 2011, the 28 members conducted research to develop a comprehensive branding plan.

More than 200 students ring bells this season

When you hear ringing bells in area stores Saturday, Dec. 8, it’s likely a UW-L student. About 240 volunteers from across the UW-L campus will ring bells to raise money for The Salvation Army as part of the Annual All-UW-L Bell Ringing sponsored by the UW-L Habitat for Humanity chapter. The large turnout is primarily student volunteers wanting to reach out to their community during the holiday season. Student representation comes from seven residence halls and 15 student organizations ranging from martial arts to pre-med club.

Turkey Trot spreads the UW-L spirit ‘everywhere’

In his hometown in China, UW-L alum Yutong Bo jogged the circle of his old high school track. Decked in his UW-L Turkey Trot bib and T-shirt mailed from his alma mater in the United States, he counted the miles as he made laps.

Student + Staff Directory is more than just numbers, it’s savings

The UW-L Student + Staff Directory may sound a little outdated, but more is within the pages than meets the eye. Amid campus phone numbers and addresses, you can find great deals if you search a little.

Uses and abuses of a liberal arts education is topic of Dec. 6 discussion

A century ago, President Woodrow Wilson suggested higher education in the liberal arts should be reserved for society's elite and the majority of Americans should be encouraged to focus only on vocational training. Was Wilson right? Are general education requirements a waste of the average student's time? What is the point of college? UW-L English Professor Bradley Butterfield will lead a discussion on the role of a liberal arts education at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in 332 Cartwright Center. Share your views and hear what others have to say at the informal discussion, "Who Are You and What Are You Doing Here? On the Uses and Abuses of a Liberal Arts Education." The discussion is part of the Issues in Higher Education Series sponsored by the United Academic Professionals of UWL (UAP-UWL). Discussions are open to students, faculty and  staff.

Eliza Haywood and the politics of attempted rape to be discussed Dec. 7

English Department faculty member Kate Parker will lead the discussion “The Battle Without Killing: Eliza Haywood and the Politics of Attempted Rape” from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in 113 Wimberly Hall. The presentation brings eighteenth-century poetry into conversation with the burgeoning domestic novel through a case study of Haywood’s "The History of Miss Betsy Thoughtless" (1751) and its mock-heroic depictions of attempted rape. Parker contends that, through Haywood’s parodic and often disturbingly comic representations of sexual violence, she both instantiates and resists a mock-heroic model of rape. Poems such as Alexander Pope’s "The Rape of the Lock" exemplify and trivialize both the female experience of desire and the social dynamics of courtship in eighteenth-century fiction, she says. The presentation of the English Department's William J. and Yvonne Hyde Colloquium Series is free and open to the public. To arrange for disability accommodations, email english@uwlax.edu or call 785.8295. For more information, visit http://rhetor.blogs.com/english.
